Project 3: Execution and Layout

Following is the brief for this project.

Starting the project, I sketched three sets of thumbnail layout options for my digital publication.

First set of layout sketches

 Second set of layout sketches

Third set of layout sketches

After having tutorial with Ms. Lilian, she suggested to continue with the third layout as it has more consistency between the pages. Therefore I proceeded to apply it in Adobe InDesign, with actual content and images. However, while adding my content in, I realized that my content is quite long, which does not fit like my sketch. So instead of having only one page for each recipe, I separated them into two for each, which is the introduction of the dish, and the recipe.

After another session of tutorial, I knew that my layout was not good enough, and the images are not appealing too. For a recipe publication, my images did not look savoury enough, so I have to edit them to a brighter and warmer tone. I also edited some unnecessary background out.

As I spent a lot of time editing all 30 images, I missed out designing the publication. Besides, I also made an animation for the cover.

Here is the second attempt for visual layout.

For this layout, I made a lot of mistake on the placement of text, as I did not follow the grid and they looked messy. Basically, most of my content did not follow the grid and I have to fix them. And as mentioned just now, I need to design the publication, like adding colours which I have chosen in the previous project.

Reflection

Experience
As I know that my layout skills are not really good, I got to do layout exploration through this project.

Observation
I did not use the grid wisely at first, but now I understand the purpose and benefits of using grid.

Findings
Like any other designs, digital publication also has invisible design theory that makes it better, e.g. the arrangement of text and the flow of reading.
